Turner leads TSU past Texas-Rio Grande Valley
EDINBURG, Texas – 
Behind a 26-point effort from Marquia Turner, the Texas Southern University’s women’s basketball team snapped the four-game win streak of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, winning a 69-55 contest Saturday afternoon at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.

Texas Southern (3-5) jumped out to a 14-3 lead over the first six and a half minutes as Turner scored eight points during the initial surge. UTRGV managed a pair of baskets to cut into the deficit but Texas Southern maintained control of the game through the half and behind Turner’s sharp-shooting, used an 18-8 run to push ahead 49-30 with just 2:30 left in the third.

Texas-Rio Grande Valley closed the period with eight unanswered points and managed to close the gap to 51-43 in the fourth, but Turner buried a trey to put the Lady Tigers back up by double-digits. From there, Texas Southern closed the game with clutch free-throw shooting from Niya Mitchell and Bre’Nae Andrews.

Mitchell scored 13 points and grabbed five boards. Andrews added 11 points. TSU shot 53.7 percent from the floor in the game (22-of-41).

UTRGV’s Madison Northcutt scored 15 points and nabbed 10 boards. Jameka Dowell added 12 points.

Alcorn holds off late Fisk charge
LORMAN, Miss. – 
A big third quarter aided the Alcorn State University women’s basketball team in a 67-64 victory over Fisk Saturday afternoon at Davey L. Whitney Complex.

Toddriana Isler (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Charisma Walker (12 points, 10 rebounds) both recorded double-doubles for Alcorn State, and De’Asia Brown added 14 points with five rebounds and three assists. Diamond Hall flirted with a double-double herself, scoring nine points, grabbing nine rebounds, making four steals and dishing three assists. Down 34-29 after a jumper from Fisk’s Andria Thomas opened the third, Alcorn pulled ahead with a 10-4 run. Fisk managed to tie the game at 44-44 with 2:47 left in the period, but Alcorn closed the quarter with a 9-3 run.

From there, Alcorn’s resiliency shone through. After Thomas brought Fisk within a possession, Isler responded with a bucket to make the game 60-56 in favor of the Lady Braves with 4:28 left. Fisk later tied the game at 60 with two and a half to play, but Isler responded once again. Jada Hargrove managed to preserve the win with a pair of free throws.

Jayla Long led Fisk with 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Thomas added 12 points and nine rebounds.

PVAMU falters late versus Rice
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – 
The Prairie View A&M University women’s basketball team fell 68-58 to Rice Saturday afternoon at the PVAMU Recreation Center.

Artavia Ford led PVAMU with 18 points and a pair of steals. Shala Dobbins added 11 points.

Down 29-21 at the break, Prairie View A&M reversed its fortunes thanks to a 21-13 scoring advantage in the third quarter that gave the Lady Panthers a one-point lead going into the fourth. Rice pulled ahead 44-43 thanks to a pair of free throws by Erica Ogwumike, but Ford put PVAMU back in front with four quick points.

From there, Prairie View surrendered a 16-4 run over a six-minute stretch, trailing by nine with less than three minutes remaining. Ford put home a lay-up to give Prairie View some life, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Panthers fell behind by as many as 13 down the stretch. Ultimately, Prairie View was outscored by Rice 26-15 in the deciding quarter.

Rice shot 31-of-38 from the free throw line, compared to an 11-of-18 stat line from the stripe for Prairie View. The Lady Panthers outscored Rice 26-20 in the paint, and shot 22-of-59 from the floor (37.3 percent)

Ogwumike led Rice with 27 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Grigsby added 16 points and five rebounds.
